You don’t control where generative AI tools surface answers. But you can control what they have to work with. And online communities filled with real questions, discussions, and solutions are quickly becoming one of the most valuable content sources you own. They’re specific. Contextual. Peer-driven. Grounded in real use cases. That kind of content is more likely to be useful to LLMs because it mirrors how people actually talk about their problems and how they solve them. In a recent episode of Power of Connection, Brian Oblinger and Paul Schneider unpack what this shift means and how communities give brands a durable advantage. Full episode link in the comments.

What can other community teams learn from Board’s approach to driving millions in value? They didn’t try to launch everything at once. Instead, they focused on building a strong foundation, starting with content, layering in programs, and evolving the experience based on what members needed and what the business could support. Three things worth highlighting from Holly Rieke and Miran Saric's playbook: 1/ They treated internal knowledge as a content asset. Before creating anything new, the team audited what already existed. With help from their internal experts, they turned that knowledge into 110+ best practices, FAQs, and how-tos, which are now among the most visited areas of the site. 2/ They made participation feel approachable. Not everyone shows up ready to post. So they created low-barrier ways for members to get involved, from a contributor program (Community Captains) to short-form videos (“3 Questions”) that highlight customer voices and product insights. 3/ They proved the impact beyond community. Using Vanilla’s API, they pulled engagement data into their CRM to tie activity to ARR, contract value, and customer health. Separately, they track support savings through a case deflection model that blends traffic, ticket avoidance, and cost-per-case. They also developed an internal “Community Influence Value” metric to reflect the broader impact across the business. All of this has led to results like: - 64% growth in members - 98% increase in community posts - Millions in tracked value through support deflection and influence on customer health The numbers speak for themselves, but it’s worth calling out just how intentional this strategy was. Kudos to the Board team!🔥

A strong community doesn’t start with content. Or an engagement strategy. Or even the platform. It starts with a decision: What role will this community play in your customer experience, and what will it take to support that long term? Before you choose a tool or plan your launch calendar, you need clarity on: - Who the community is for (specifically) - What value it’s meant to create for them and for your business - And what team or resources will make that possible behind the scenes Get those decisions right, and the rest has something to build on: - Onboarding becomes intentional, not just a welcome message - Events and programs reinforce your purpose, not just fill a calendar - And members show up with a clear sense of what the space is for On May 14, we’re talking with Izzy Neis of ModSquad and Heather Wendt of Higher Logic about how to set that kind of foundation and why it matters.
