How do you know which community metrics matter? If you manage an online community, you’re probably tracking dozens of data points. But not all metrics are equally useful or relevant at every stage of growth. A simple way to prioritize is to think in terms of a pyramid: 🔹 Foundational metrics These are your baseline activity indicators. Think: posts, comments, unique visitors, logins, page views. They tell you whether your community has enough momentum to build on. If this layer isn’t stable, optimizing for engagement or outcomes won’t work. This is the core focus for early-stage communities. 🔹 Health metrics These measure the quality of engagement. Think: returning member rate, time to first response, thread depth. Health metrics help you spot friction points, shape your content strategy, and create a better member experience. 🔹 Outcome metrics These tie community performance to tangible business goals. Think: support deflection or case reduction, lead generation or influenced revenue, product feedback volume and incorporation rate. They’re often lagging indicators and can’t be measured reliably unless your community is already active and healthy. That’s why they sit at the top of the pyramid.
