  • Measuring community ROI isn’t always straightforward. Some impacts are obvious like new leads. Others build over time like higher retention. Here are 9 metrics that can help you show your community’s impact: - Lead gen: Track how community interactions generate new leads and sales influence. - Content influence on revenue: Measure how community articles and discussions help move prospects through the sales funnel. - Product ideation and adoption: Show how member feedback leads to new features, better adoption, and reduced churn. - Controlled comparisons: Compare metrics like retention and revenue between members who engage in the community and those who don’t. - Variable withholding experiments: Adjust one process (such as onboarding) to test how community involvement changes outcomes. - Advocacy activities: Track referrals, reviews, and testimonials driven by active community members. - Support deflection and cost modeling: Estimate savings by measuring how many support questions are answered in the community. - Event-driven conversions: Track registrations, upsells, and participation rates from community-hosted events. - Survey and feedback data: Use surveys and direct feedback to understand how the community influences decisions like renewals and referrals. No single report will tell the full story, but combining these signals gets you a lot closer.

  • You don’t control where generative AI tools surface answers. But you can control what they have to work with. And online communities filled with real questions, discussions, and solutions are quickly becoming one of the most valuable content sources you own. They’re specific. Contextual. Peer-driven. Grounded in real use cases. That kind of content is more likely to be useful to LLMs because it mirrors how people actually talk about their problems and how they solve them. In a recent episode of Power of Connection, Brian Oblinger and Paul Schneider unpack what this shift means and how communities give brands a durable advantage. Full episode link in the comments.

  • What can other community teams learn from Board’s approach to driving millions in value? They didn’t try to launch everything at once. Instead, they focused on building a strong foundation, starting with content, layering in programs, and evolving the experience based on what members needed and what the business could support. Three things worth highlighting from Holly Rieke and Miran Saric's playbook: 1/ They treated internal knowledge as a content asset. Before creating anything new, the team audited what already existed. With help from their internal experts, they turned that knowledge into 110+ best practices, FAQs, and how-tos, which are now among the most visited areas of the site. 2/ They made participation feel approachable. Not everyone shows up ready to post. So they created low-barrier ways for members to get involved, from a contributor program (Community Captains) to short-form videos (“3 Questions”) that highlight customer voices and product insights. 3/ They proved the impact beyond community. Using Vanilla’s API, they pulled engagement data into their CRM to tie activity to ARR, contract value, and customer health. Separately, they track support savings through a case deflection model that blends traffic, ticket avoidance, and cost-per-case. They also developed an internal “Community Influence Value” metric to reflect the broader impact across the business. All of this has led to results like: - 64% growth in members - 98% increase in community posts - Millions in tracked value through support deflection and influence on customer health The numbers speak for themselves, but it’s worth calling out just how intentional this strategy was. Kudos to the Board team!🔥
