  • What’s underrated: the rich editor in a community platform. The quality of that editor really shapes the experience of creating something, including how easily you can embed, link, format, and add the small details that make a post clearer and more complete. It influences how often people want to contribute, how effectively they can express a question or idea, and how naturally engagement follows. If you haven’t seen it, Brendan Parm's Higher Logic Vanilla demo shows how those small but important pieces come together.

As simple as it may seem, creating posts is a key part of the online community experience, and so this week's video is about the Rich Text Editor in Higher Logic's Vanilla platform. Vanilla's editor is a little different than most you see, as it started as a project to build something from the ground up with a modern and minimalist design. We've added a number of features to it this year that I feel have truly allowed it to take shape. In this video, I go through the highlights of the editor and all the various formatting options available.

  • A great customer experience is one where information and context move with the customer. Whether someone is engaging in the community, reaching out to support, or moving between the two, the transition should feel seamless and consistent. That’s why we’re adding more ways to connect Higher Logic Vanilla with the support tools teams use every day. Our new integrations with ServiceNow and Freshworks's Freshdesk help deliver that by allowing teams to create a support ticket directly from a community post with the key details already included. A status card on the post keeps the community conversation linked to the support ticket as it progresses. You can also trigger ticket creation automatically through automation rules, using conditions like sentiment, reports, or inactivity to route important posts to support right away. These integrations give teams more flexibility while helping create a truly continuous experience across community and support.

Planning for a new year always raises familiar questions: What’s changing? What’s staying the same? And how do we know if we’re focusing on the right things? As we head into 2026, many associations are noticing similar themes: shifts in member behavior, the growing influence of AI, and new pressures on internal operations. It’s a lot easier to make sense of it all when you can see how your experience lines up with others in the field. On December 4, we’re hosting a conversation featuring industry leaders Reggie Henry, CAE, Roberta Rosenberg, MS, Kelly Whelan and Brendan Leehe. Their work gives them a wide-angle view of what’s happening across associations, and they’ll dig into: - The trends they’re seeing right now - The questions they hear most often - What today’s signals suggest for 2026 We'll dive into topics like member acquisition, engagement, renewal, and the operational processes that connect the whole experience. • Advocacy doesn’t happen on its own. It grows out of a community that’s been intentionally built and cared for over time. People advocate for a brand or cause after they’ve had meaningful experiences (consistent engagement, trust, and relationships) that make them feel connected to it. You can’t begin by asking for advocacy; you have to create the conditions for it by investing in genuine community building first.

Community and advocacy aren’t separate strategies. They’re stages of the same journey. 1️⃣ Engagement builds trust. 2️⃣ Trust builds loyalty. 3️⃣ Loyalty creates advocacy. You can’t skip to step 3. The magic happens when your community strategy earns advocacy instead of asking for it.

  • So many great conversations and ideas start at events. Your community is the perfect place to build on that. Use it to: - Ask what people want to learn - Get a pulse on topics with a quick poll - Start a thread to warm up the discussion before the session - Keep the conversation going after by sharing the recording, posting takeaways, and seeing what new ideas surface You can also use your community to host its own programming, like office hours, member Q&As, or user spotlights. These kinds of moments build familiarity and give members another reason to show up and take part. Higher Logic’s Brendan Parm shares a quick look at how communities can use events to build ongoing engagement, shown here in our Vanilla platform.

This week, I'm discussing the events module in Higher Logic's Vanilla platform. Events offer an excellent opportunity for online communities to connect with members in new ways. Some of the ways we see customers use events: -Host community webinars or office hours (great for community engagement but also scaled customer success programs) -Promote external events for their marketing team -Bring your user group events list into your online community events list. In this video, I discuss: -Creating an event -Highlighting an event and event lists -Integrating with Zoom -Event notifications. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

  • Is your community full of great questions...but slow answers? Improving response time starts with designing systems that make engagement easy. From automating post visibility to using AI that helps members find existing answers faster, small changes can make a big difference. 🛑 Stop treating your online community like a side project. Your online community is a tremendous growth engine IF you make it core to your offering. When you approach community as more than an add-on, you make your value proposition so much clearer. Members don’t just consume — they connect, solve, and push the discipline forward TOGETHER. 🎧 Learn from community leader, Georgina Donahue, on our latest episode of The Member Engagement Show. • “People are always going to want to hear from someone who’s done the thing they’re trying to do.” - Nicole Saunders That’s the heartbeat of community. It’s people connecting over similar goals, challenges, lived experiences, and those small “oh, you too?” moments that make them feel seen. AI can help us get there faster. It can surface the right threads, point us toward the right people, and spark the conversations that might’ve never happened otherwise. But it can’t be the conversation. The future of community will be more intentional and more human. If AI helps take care of the logistics, we can spend more time talking with people, listening, and working through the messy and meaningful conversations that lead to real connection and progress.
