You’re trying to build a strong team. How can you create a culture of trust in the workplace?
Until metrics connect HOW work happens with WHAT work happens there will be no consistency between who does the work and who gets the credit. That lack of accountability is toxic and causes all sorts of cultural friction. Trust is a systemic issue, not purely an interpersonal issue.

How can you handle conflict when using laissez-faire leadership?
To me, laissez-faire leadership contradicts the definition of leadership, which is having a vision of what is possible and fostering progress toward that vision. The best way to avoid negative conflict is to foster a culture where conflict is expected, not given or taken personally, and not contentious. Innovation and the best solutions can only be done by interrogating and resolving conflicting perspectives. Done well, with good leadership, this can be energizing and enjoyable.

How can you maintain accurate and up-to-date data?
There is more data than we can ever use these days. Trying to make sense of it all is an impossible task, and too often, we try to cobble together the data we have into something that makes sense. Instead, step back from the data and define the questions worth answering. Then, prioritize those questions because there is an ROI in generating metrics that we rarely consider. What decisions do you need to make? What is the data that best informs those decisions? Too many metrics are almost worse than no metrics at all - and metrics can't make decisions for you, so think carefully about what metrics are clear, helpful, and easy to communicate before you begin.

What are effective ways to engage community members who resist change?
Change can no longer be managed as a project. It must be continuous and adaptive, which requires continuous conversations with organizational communities. Additionally, most business decisions are not clear cut, and decisions are much better when based on the interests and energy of the organization; which directions spark community imagination? Energy is critical to the ultimate success of a decision. Effective community involvement in decision-making and change requires two things: 1. Power sharing, negotiating differences, and valuing diverse perspectives, which are often skill gaps for executives. 2. Clear accountability for decisions once input has been gathered because consensus is not an effective operating approach.
