Marius Ciortea

Chief Community Officer

Marius Ciortea is Chief Community Officer at Higher Logic and a globally recognized leader in enterprise community strategy, digital engagement, and trust-driven customer ecosystems. With more than two decades of experience building and scaling global communities for some of the world’s most influential technology companies—including IBM, Oracle, and VMware—Ciortea has dedicated his career to helping organizations harness the power of community to build trusted relationships, accelerate knowledge sharing, and create meaningful engagement at scale.

At Higher Logic, Ciortea leads the company’s global community strategy and thought leadership around the future of engagement. His work focuses on helping organizations create modern community ecosystems where customers, members, and experts collaborate to share knowledge, solve problems, and build lasting relationships. By combining community platforms, data insights, and AI-powered discovery, Ciortea is helping organizations unlock the collective intelligence of their networks and transform how they engage with the people they serve.

Ciortea joined Higher Logic after serving as Chief Community Officer at IBM, where he led the strategy and evolution of IBM’s global community ecosystem. In that role, he oversaw a unified digital environment connecting developers, customers, partners, and technology professionals across IBM’s product and innovation communities. Under his leadership, IBM’s community initiatives expanded into a large-scale knowledge network supporting hundreds of thousands of members worldwide and generating vast volumes of expertise-driven content and collaboration.

During his time at IBM, Ciortea also helped pioneer the use of artificial intelligence within enterprise communities, introducing AI-enabled tools designed to surface trusted knowledge from community conversations and expert discussions. These innovations helped users quickly access answers, connect with subject-matter experts, and unlock the value of the collective knowledge created within the community.

Prior to IBM, Ciortea spent more than a decade in leadership roles across the enterprise technology ecosystem. At Oracle, he worked on global developer and partner initiatives that helped scale some of the company’s most influential technical communities. Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions at VMware, where he helped grow developer and user communities that supported the company’s rapidly expanding ecosystem of customers and technology partners.

Across these roles, Ciortea has consistently been at the forefront of a major shift in how organizations engage with their audiences. Rather than relying solely on traditional marketing and communication channels, he has championed the idea that communities should serve as strategic engines for collaboration, innovation, and customer trust.

Over the past several years, Ciortea has become widely recognized as a leading voice in the transformation of enterprise communities. His work has demonstrated how large-scale community ecosystems can drive measurable business value—from accelerating product adoption and customer success to influencing significant enterprise pipeline and strengthening brand advocacy.

At the center of Ciortea’s leadership philosophy is a belief that the future of engagement will be defined by trust. In what many industry observers describe as the emerging “trust economy,” organizations succeed not by simply broadcasting information but by building authentic relationships and creating spaces where people can connect, collaborate, and learn from one another.

Ciortea views communities as the infrastructure that enables this new model of engagement. In his view, trusted communities allow organizations to create environments where customers can exchange real-world expertise, ask questions openly, and collaborate with peers and experts in ways that traditional channels cannot replicate.

This vision has shaped his approach to community leadership. He advocates for organizations to build communities that foster transparency, encourage peer-to-peer collaboration, and empower members to actively contribute their expertise. When designed thoughtfully, he believes these communities become self-sustaining networks of knowledge, advocacy, and innovation.

Ciortea is also a strong proponent of combining human collaboration with intelligent technology to scale engagement. While artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how people discover information, he believes AI should enhance—rather than replace—the role of community. By helping surface trusted knowledge created by real experts, AI can make community insights more accessible and valuable to users around the world.

Through his work, Ciortea continues to champion a new generation of engagement leaders who are rethinking how organizations connect with their audiences. He encourages companies to move beyond transactional interactions and toward relationship-driven ecosystems built on trust, expertise, and shared purpose.

Today, as Chief Community Officer at Higher Logic, Ciortea is helping organizations across industries design community-first engagement strategies that strengthen customer relationships and unlock the full value of collective knowledge. His vision is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: the organizations that thrive in the digital age will be those that build trusted communities where people can connect, share expertise, and create value together.
