In one of our recent conversations, we focused on a shift that many organizations have yet to recognize: creating valuable community content is no longer enough. If AI systems cannot discover and understand that content, much of its potential impact is lost. What follows is a synthesis of the strategic and technical themes that emerged from that discussion.
For years, community teams have focused on making content discoverable through traditional search engines. That mindset is rapidly expanding.
As more people begin their research by asking ChatGPT, Google AI, and other generative AI tools instead of typing keywords into a search engine, communities face a new challenge: becoming visible to AI systems that gather information differently than traditional search crawlers.
One observation captured the shift well:
“If AI can’t access your knowledge, it can’t recommend it.”
This represents more than another optimization exercise. It is a change in how digital knowledge is discovered, cited, and reused. Communities that are invisible to AI may gradually disappear from the conversations where decisions are increasingly being made.
One of the strongest themes throughout the discussion was that technical infrastructure has become a strategic concern for community teams.
The first obstacle is often the organization’s own security settings. Many communities unintentionally block AI systems through restrictive firewall configurations. A firewall acts like a security gate, deciding who is allowed to enter a website. While those protections are essential for malicious traffic, they can also prevent legitimate AI systems from accessing public knowledge.
An important takeaway here is that community managers can no longer assume public content is automatically accessible. Working closely with IT and security teams is becoming an essential part of community strategy.
Another participant summarized the situation simply:
“The content may already exist; the problem is that AI often can’t reach it.”
An important distinction that is frequently overlooked is that not every AI bot performs the same function; some bots collect information that helps train future AI models. Others retrieve information in real time so an AI assistant can answer a user’s question immediately.
Understanding this difference matters because organizations often make blanket decisions about allowing or blocking automated traffic without considering the business implications.
Allowing only one category of bot may limit long-term visibility, while blocking both can remove an organization almost entirely from emerging AI ecosystems.
Community managers and/or community ops professionals need to understand which bots provide value so that they can work with technical stakeholders to develop thoughtful policies rather than relying on default security settings.
Beyond firewall settings, several technical components influence whether AI systems can understand and trust community content.
One example is the robots.txt file. This small text file tells automated systems which parts of a website they may or may not access. While originally designed for search engines, it now plays an increasingly important role in guiding AI crawlers.
Similarly, a sitemap.xml file provides a structured map of a website, helping automated systems discover important pages efficiently instead of relying on random navigation.
The discussion also referenced the emerging llm.txt standard, which is designed specifically to help large language models identify the most useful information on a site. Although still evolving, it reflects a broader trend toward creating clearer communication between websites and AI systems.
These files act as directions that help AI systems understand where valuable knowledge lives and how it is organized – important tools in ensuring that your community content is getting cited by AI search.
Another recurring theme centered on accessibility:
Many communities hide their content and conversations behind authentication, requiring users to log in before viewing discussions or resources. While that approach may still be appropriate for sensitive information, it limits what AI systems can understand about the community.
Maintaining a meaningful collection of publicly accessible knowledge enables AI to recognize expertise, understand context, and reference authoritative content.
This is not an argument for making everything public. Rather, it reflects a growing recognition that discoverability and openness are becoming strategic considerations alongside privacy and member exclusivity.
Perhaps the most significant strategic shift that we discussed involved measurement and how GEO is changing the conversation around community ROI.
For years, community performance has often been evaluated through familiar metrics such as page views, sessions, and visitor growth. Those indicators become more complicated as AI bots increasingly visit community sites.
A rise in traffic no longer necessarily reflects greater human engagement. Instead, organizations must distinguish between human visitors and automated systems while recognizing that bot traffic itself may represent meaningful value.
If AI systems repeatedly reference a community’s knowledge when answering user questions, those citations become a new form of visibility—one that extends far beyond a traditional website visit.
As one discussion point suggested:
“The question is no longer just how many people visited your content, but how often AI considered it valuable enough to use.”
This represents a broader shift from measuring activity to measuring influence.
Technical accessibility alone is not enough.
The conversation repeatedly returned to the importance of content quality and organization. Clear headings, logical page structures, descriptive titles, canonical URLs, and consistent formatting all help AI systems interpret information accurately.
These principles closely resemble long-established SEO practices, but the objective is evolving.
Instead of simply helping search engines rank pages, structured content helps AI understand relationships between ideas, identify authoritative information, and generate more accurate responses.
Organizations that already invest in well-organized knowledge bases may find themselves well positioned for this transition.
One of the most compelling observations from the discussion was how the role of community management continues to evolve.
Community leaders are no longer responsible only for engagement, moderation, and content strategy. Increasingly, they are becoming connectors between business objectives, technology teams, content strategy, and AI readiness.
The conversation reflected a growing expectation that community professionals understand enough about technical infrastructure to participate in discussions involving security, search visibility, and AI accessibility.
That shift mirrors a broader transformation across digital organizations, where knowledge management, marketing, technology, and community strategy are becoming increasingly interconnected.
There is no established blueprint for optimizing communities for the AI era. Standards continue to evolve, AI platforms continue to change, and organizations are still learning how to balance accessibility, governance, privacy, and value measurement.
What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that community knowledge is taking on a new role. Rather than serving only the people who visit a community directly, it is becoming a source of information that can shape how AI systems answer questions for millions of users.
For community managers, this is both a technical and strategic opportunity. The organizations that proactively collaborate with IT, improve content accessibility, and rethink how they measure success will be better positioned to ensure their communities remain visible, trusted, and influential in an AI-driven world. The future of community will not simply be defined by the conversations it hosts, but by how effectively its knowledge becomes part of the broader intelligence ecosystem.
